THIMPHU:

 

Thimphu, located in Western Bhutan, is the capital city and has a population of approximately 100,000.  The main residences of Bhutan’s Royal Family are located here. It is the center for business, government, and religion, and has modern conveniences, such as hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, and shopping.  It is also one of the few places in Bhutan with ATM machines. 

Many historic and other sites are found here, including Trashi Chhoe Dzong, the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, the Motithang Takin Preserve, the Folk Heritage Museum, the National Library, the National Memorial Choeten, the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, and the National Textile Museum.
