PUNAKHA DZONG:

The verdant and beautiful Punakha Valley is approximately a 3-hour drive east of Thimphu. Punakha Dzong sits at the confluence of the Mo Chhu (mother river) and Po Chhu (father river).

Punakha Dzong has been vitally important to Bhutan for more than 300 years.  King Ugyen Wangchuck, Bhutan’s first king, was crowned here in 1907. It is still the winter home to the Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot of Bhutan.  The wedding of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck to Her Majesty Queen Jetsun Pema took place at the Dzong in 2011. Inside houses many sacred Buddhist relics and the remains of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and Pema Lingpa.
